Messrs Holland and Nissen are erecting a sawmill on Mr Bryce's property in theKiwitea. A general meeting of members of the ' Feilding Cycling Club will be held at 8 p.m. in the FeUding Hotel this evening. Mr Seffern, editor of the Taranaki Herald, retired into private life after forty years connection with the Press. A general meeting of the Feilding Bowling Club will be held at the Denbigh Hotel on ' Wednesday evening next at 8 p.m. , An advertisement relative to the issne of tickets, by the Bailway Department on the Prince of Wales Birthday, Appears to-day. Tbe Pemberton Rifle Club will open ' the shooting season on Saturday, No- ' vember 16th, at the new range on Mr I Boscoe's property.' Captain Edwin wired at noon to-day : —Strong N. to W. and B.W. winds, and glass rise. A Gazette Extraordinary has been issued, proroguing Parliament until the Oth of January. The son of Mrs Watts, who has been ill for some time, died at the Palmerston North Hospital this morning. Two deaths from cancer are announced — Mr J. Morgan of Wellington, and Mr J. B. Gudgeon, Postmaster of Picton. The following horse was omitted from the Shorts Handicap — second day — " A.1.0." Exchanges please copy. During the alterations being made in his office, Mr E.Goodbehere has removed premises nearly opposite Mr Carthew's. In France, if a structural defect in a bicycle causes an injury to the person using it, the manufacturer is legally accountable for damages. Tenders are invited by the Manawatu Timber Company for carting from Kaikaura mill to Manganoho railway station, also from Birmingham to Feilding. The Palmerston Hospital report for October is as follows:— In Hospital at beginning of month, 20; admitted, 18; discharged, 20 ; died 1 ; in hospital on 31st, 17. A man named Ahem, who was grubbing a tree at Warialda, N.S.W., which fell in a -wrong direction and injured a woman and child, went out of his mind with grief. A remarkable discovery is reported from Kangaroo Flat, near Bendigo, where a Chinese, who has been sluicingfor gold for eight years, came across a tin containing 500 sovereigns. The first championship cricket matches of the season will be played on Saturday next, when the following will be decided : — Birmingham v. Carnarvon, at Feilding; Colyton v. Pohangina, at Pohangina. We have to thank the Government printer for a copy of . the New Zealand Official Hand Book for 1895, prepared by the Registrar-General. This is a most useful publication for both business men and settlers. At last meeting of the Wanganui Harbor Board, the Secretary was requested to write to the Chairman of the Pohangina Association re a request from them to be allowed to mortgage and give individual titles. Tenders are invited by Messrs James and Heaps, architects, for alterations and additions to the business premises of Messrs Spence and Spence, in Fergusson street, drapers. Tenders close on the 13th instant. We are indebted to Mr J. H. Fry, of Makino, for the following register of tbe rainfall for the month of October :—October 1895, 3-13 inches of rain fell ; 1894, 0-45 inches ; 1893, 3-78 in ; 1892, 2.45 in ; 1891, 8-16 in ; 1890, 531 in ; 1889, 8-12 inches. The cricket mafceb. Birmingham v. Kangiwahia, which was to have been played at the latter place on Saturday last, had to be abandoned owing to the rain. Birmingham went to the wickets first and bad scored 77 runs for seven wickets when the rain stopped further play. The local Oddfellows Lodge held a church parade yesterday morning, about thirty members in full regalia joining in the procession which, headed by the Feilding Brass Band, marched to the Wesleyan Church, where the Rev W. H. Judkins preached an eloquent and appropriate sermon. In a replace advertisement it will be seen that Messrs Spence and Spence have received further consignments of new goods for the summer season. The Bon Marche is now literally packed from floor to ceiling with new goods of every description for ladies and gentlemen's wear. First-class goods at the lowest possible prices. The heavy downpour of rain on Friday afternoon last having burst through the roof of Mr J. S. Milson's stationery shop and damaged a large quantity of stock, Mr Milson has decided to hold a clearing sale during the present month. He is offering for sale the whole of the damaged gooda at prices considerably below cost in order to effect a speedy clearance to make room for a fresh Christmas stock. The social and dance in connection with the Excelsior Skating Rink takes place on Monday next in the Drill Hall, and as it is the last night of the Skating Rink this season there should be a very large attendance. The public knowing how succesaiuily the Skating Carnivals were carried out they may rest assured that the management have done everything possible to ensure a good night's enjoyment at a very small cost. A man named W. McDermott was arrested at Birmingham yesterday morning by Constables Tuohy and Heally on a charge of sheep stealing. The charge against accused was being beard as we went to press this afternoon before Messrs W. A. Sandilands and H. L. Sherwill, J.P.'s. Constable Tuohy conducted the case for the prosecution and Mr Fitzherbert appeared for the defence. The most fashionable bird of the season promises to be the Pekin duck, a most excellent bird both as regards size and as profuse layers. A Feilding man saw three of these approaching him on a side walk in an adjacent town, known some times as the Chicago of New Zealand, and he afterwards described them as " The finest things I ever saw, as big as geese, and more dignified than a Langsban rooster — and, may I never break bread again— if they didn't jostle me onto the road in the gntter."
