A Heavy Thunderstorm.
One of the heaviest thunderstorms on record, passed over this district yesterday afternoon. It began about 4 o'clock and continued for twenty-five minutes with unabated violence. The flashes of lightning were very vivid and the thunderclaps shook the dwellings. Heavy rain and hail fell, the hailstones being exceptionally large. The streets were flooded in a few minutes. Some considerable damage was done in a few cases, especially where spouting wan fouled with sparrows' nests, etc., and the storm water forced to find an escape in new directions. This happened, we regret to record, to Mr Milson who consequently had some new fancy goods just opened up, injured to a very great extent. The damage in Mr Milson's case was caused by the spouting becoming blocked with paper, the result being a large volume of water poured into the shop through the ceiling. General sympathy is expressed with Mr Milson, who had about £150 worth of goods seriously damaged. Some of the fruit trees in the orchards suffered somewhat, and shrubs were stripped of their flowers.
