LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.

(Per Press Association.) Wellington, October 21. The Council met at 2-30. The managers appointed by the Council to confer on the Alcoholic Liquors Sale Control Bill reported that they were unable to agree. They insisted on their amendments as to national prohibition, inspection of clubs add control of Bellamy's, but were willing to abandon the amendments by which half the voters on the roll must vote to render a poll valid and to alter the votes so as not to interfere with' the existing law. The report of the managers was adopted %vithout debate. On the question of insisting on the amendment made in the Land for Settlement Bill, removing the District Land Registrar from the Land Purchase Board, the Council divided.— Ayes, 15; noes, 15. The Speaker, in order to give an opportunity of further discussion, voted with the noes, and Hons. Richardson, Walker and Kelly were appointed to draw up reasons. The Government Advances to Settlers Act amendment Bill was considered in committee. Dr. Grace moved to strike out clause 5, which amends the principal act by allowing suburban lands to be offered as security for an advance. After debate it was agreed to report progress in order to give time for further consideration. The Council then adjourned.
