Gov er nor Brassey on Federation.

(Per Press Association.) Albany, This Day. Lord Brassev was entertained at a banquet. In referring to the Imperial de fence he said it was quite clear to bis mind that the share of Australia in defence would be ot a local character nnd if efficiently attended to by the local navy was all that they could possibly be expected to do. In joining the Imperial Federation League it was never his view that they should endeavor to get the colonies to give a greater pecuniary assistance to defence, and he believed that the public feeling in the Old Country was that whatever might be the future development, at the present time it would be unwise and was uncalled for to make any attempt to increase the contributions. He had come to the conclusion that the Imperial Federation League should cease to exist, and there was now no need for anybody to stir up sympathy for the colonies. His Excellency then referred to his estate near here, aDd said General Booth desired to xise it as Oversea Colony* bat after consideration he bad decided not to accede to that request, as it was not a good thing for a young country to have hundreds of people not of the best class as colonists dumped down within it.
