RUMOURED LOSS OF LIFE.
(Per Press Association.) Wellington, This Day. A destructive fire broke out tins morning, at about 10 o'clock, in the block extending from Mercer street to Old Custom Hoiiso street, on the Eastern side of Willis street The fire originated in John Smith's Victorian Restaurant, which was <>utted, and spread to the London Haird reusing Saloon, on the southern side, aud Smith's (fishmonger) aud Rash (jeweller) on the Northern side. The saloon and fish monger's shop were gutted, and the upstairs portion of the jeweller's shop sustained some damage iroui the tire. The furniture and C'itccts in the restaurant were destroyed. The stock in the saloon was damaged by water. The Tailoring Company and fishmonger's shop wore saved. The Weekly ' Herald, adjoining tho saloon, was damaged by wator. The fire originated in a Wlnjom upstairs iv tho restaurant, which was occupied last night by a man unknown, and as ho can't be found a rumour i; current he has perished in the ilamcs. A search was made for his remains without success, and nothing is known, so far. as to his where ibouts. Insurances unknown.
