Several Feilding gentlemen went to Palmerston this afternoon to play bowls. The Premier considers the Governor's Speech and the debate on it is pure waste of time. Our readers are reminded of the Wcsleyau anniversary tea and public meeting to be held this evening. Messrs Abraham and Williams will hold their usual stock sale at Palmerston to-morrow, at 1 o'clock. The polo match on skates, Palmerston v. Feildmjj, will be played at the Excelsior Skating Punk this evening. The Post regrets to learn that Mr George Allen is seriously ill. Ou Saturday he was unconscious. Dr An.son is attending him. Llr Justice "Williams, of Dunedin, has been appointed President of the Court of Arbitration under the Conciliation and Arbitration Act. The next band contest is to be held in Dunedin, and the test pieces are to be chosen by Booscy (London) and Wright and Round (Liverpool). Notice of an action for alleged libel has been served upon the proprietors of the Wairarapa Daily Time?* by Mr C. A. Powuall, at the instance of several publicans. Mr A. Ferguson, who was in business is Palmerston North for pcdiq years as general storekeeper, lias decided 1 to start business in Wangauui as bookseller and stationer. Messrs Gorton aud Son give notice today that o-.ving to the A. and P. Show they have altered the date of their ik'Xu Fciidiug sale from October 20 th to November Ist. Mr I!. J. Thompson, of the Cash Exchange Cc-op., will have a notice in tomorrow's issue drawing attention to the recent shipments of summer millinery and dress materials now opened up. Tho Dairy Union intend to give a higher price to all the creamery suppliers who can keep the various creameries going during the winter, the minimum quantity being put down at 200 gallons. The additions to the Feilding State School building have now been completed the work being carried out in a most satisfactory manner by Messrs Hubuer Bros-, contractors. This additional room will prove of great convenience to the teaching staff. It is stated that at a place called Hope, a few miles fro2n Nelson, no less than six persons have died from that dread disease— cancer. It has been suggested that some poisonous weed grown in the localit}', is eaten by the cattle, and the germs of the disease are conveyed in the milk. " Why is it that tho good arc not always happy ? " was the question which a Sunday school teacher put to her class of boys, last Sunday, says an exchange. A special meeting of the Sorough Council was held at noon to-day to confirm resolutions striking special rates to cover interest on loans for construction of Mangaone and Kiwitea bridges. The Mayor (Mr W. A. Sandilands), and Crs W. A. L. Bailey, T.K. Chamberlain, W. G. Shearer, A. R.Allan, and E. Good - behere were present. The following were the tenders received for constructing the bridge across the Kiwitea stream on Kimbolton road, by the Feilding Borough Council : — J. It is announced to-day by Mr William Reader, that he has commenced business as coachbuilder and wheelright in the premises lately erected opposite the Drill Hall, in Stafford street, for Mr John Bishop, Mr C. Bray being the architect. The situation is central and Mr Reader should command a large business connection. Mr Reader has been resident in Palmerston N. for two years, where he has earned the reputation of being a first-class workman. We are confident that Mr Reader will do well in his new home. Members of the Feilding Fire Brigade held a meeting last evening and decided to put a team into training which will probably compete at the Fire Brigades' competition at Christchurch next March. The question of thesi te of the bell tower was discussed and members expressed themselves strongly agaiust its removal to the Court House paddock as that would be too far away from the most populated part of the town, and it would be impossible to hear the bell in the western side of the borough, from which direction the prevailing winds came. The Rangitikei Chess and Draughts Club has just started its annual championship tourney, and some nice play is likely to ensue. The entries are not numerous but choice. They are by Messrs Meldrum, A. Jfi. Remington, O'Lougblen, Pleasants, and Gilford. Each has to play two games with the other. Up to the present Mr O'Loughlen has beaten Mr Vleasants, Mr Meldrum has beaten Mr Gifford as?d drawn with Mr Remington, while Messrs peasants and Remington have played their- two games, both of which went to Mr Pleasauts, y/ho therefore leads Mr Meldrum by half a point, who again leads Mr O'Loughlen by 2 * point.— Mercury. For some months the Catholic denomination of Campbellfcown have been expecting the opening of their new church which is of handsome dimensions and appearance. It will seat about 100, and ibje workmanship reflects credit upon tbe builders. The weather has been agaiust the opening at the chncch, and the missions, which are given by the Archbishop throughout the Archdiocese, prevented opening sooner. On Sunday next the opening aud blessing of the new Catholic church will take place by Archbishop Redwood, at 3 o'clock in the afternoon, aud we have no hesitation in saying that a real oratorical treat is in &%»VS for the inhabitants of Campbcllizowh &&& district.
