More Amendments to the Tariff.

[PerPeess Association.] Wellington, October 14. In the House* to-night amendments to " The Customs and Duties Act, 1895," were brought down by Governor's message. The amendments are in the schedules of the Bill, and are as follows i — In Schedule A, Class 1 (foods and articles for human consumption), the item vinegar, table, not exceeding 5 per cent, of acidity, 6d per gallon — the duty is altered to read " not in exceeding 65 per cent of acidity." In Class 12 (manufactures of metal), " gas metres " were added to the 10 per cent ad valorem list along with gas metres and apparatus for producing gas. At the end of the same class the following item was added: — "Steam engines and parts thereof," including the boiler or boilers therefore, imported specially for mining or dairying purposes £5 per cent ad valorem (this duty to come into force on 27th September, 1895). In Schedule B, containing the free h'st, Class 5 (drugs, &c), this item, "concentrated extracts or essences in liquid form," was amended by striking out " or essences in liquid form." In Class 12 (metals), the words " for dairying purposes," were inserted after " separators and coolers." In the same class the following new item was added, "machinery for gold saving purposes and processes" (this exemption to take effect on and after 27th September, 1895). The Premier said he proposed that the House should take these amendments into consideration next sitting day.
