Pohangina County Loan Proposals.

A meeting of ratepayers in the Coal Creek Riding was held at Cr E. Bell's woolshed at noon on Saturday last for the purpose of discussing a proposal to borrow £'300 for the construction of the Branch road, in the Kiwitea County. Cr Bell presided. On the motion of Mr Hedges it was resolved that a poll be taken on some day to be appointed. A vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the meeting. The meeting of ratepayers of the Pohangina Riding to consider the proposals for raising a loan of £7568 for roading and bridging the district, was held in the Council office on Saturday 12th inst. Cr Selby presided and there was a good muster of ratepayers. The schedule of work to be done under the loan was read, and also the notice convening the meeting. The Chairman satisfactorily explained the reasons why the previous loan proposal was lost, and stated if this one was carried a certain amount of money would be available. Mr Rutherford expressed dissatisfaction at the loan proposals as he was of opinion that most of the work would be done in or near the township and advocated forming a special ward for his district and also desired a deviation in the proposed works. Mr Cornfoot stated that he was of opinion that a deviation from the scheduled works was impossible. Mr Hayns stated that in his opinion the scheduled moaey could be diverted foe other work by consent of the Audi-tor-General and the settlers. Mr Cornfoot proposed that the proposals should not go to the poll. Mr Saunders seconded the motion. Considerable discussion ensued, and ultimately a show of hands was taken as to whether the proposals should be agreed to and resulted in five votes being recorded for and seven against the proposals. The Chairman decided that the proposals should not go to the poll. The meeting bad been advertised for over a month in several of the papers and as only about six town ratepayers turned up, it was presumed that -the feeling of the townspeople was against the loan. — Standard.
