THE GRAIN TRADE. RESULTS OF CHEAP MONEY. (Per Press Association). Sydney, Oct. 10. Huddarfc, Parker and Co. have ordered a new steamer for the intercolonial trade, larger than the Tasmania. The miners of the Metropolitan colliery have accepted a reduction of 4d per ton in the hewing rate, which is now 2s 2d. Melbourne, October 10. A meeting of the committee of Chamber of Commerce dealt with complaints that the trade in feed grain is being diverted from Melbourne to New Zealand land and Tasmania owing to tbe use of second-hand bags. It was decided to bring the matter prominently under the notice of farmers, and urge them to use new bags. The Age, referring to the New South Wales loan, says it might be an instructive lesson in connection with the suggested consolidation of Victorian loans, and it strongly urges the adoption of the proposals. The general concensus of opinion, it adds, is that the interest now being paid is out of proportion to the earning capacity of the loan money. Adelaide, This Day. In the Assembly a Bill was introduced authorising the Agent-General to inscribe stock in London, and thus save .£3OOO per annum. The Treasurer moved the second reading of the State Advances Bill sub stituted for the measure withdrawn. The area of advances is enlarged and made to include several classes of owners. Sir J. Downer strongly opposed the creation of a State Bank on these lines, because it would be a rival to the sayings bank and lead to possible complications.
