A HELP TO THE UNEMPLOYED.

A very excellent suggestion has been made by Mr D. J. Nathan in an interview with a representative of " The People," a new journal now started in Wellington. It is proposed that the State should subsidise the flax industry, and, as an argument in favor, Mr Nathan said : — " Say 10,000 tons of flax were turned out, a bonus of £3 a ton would amount to £30,000. But the flaxmiUers would spend £120,000 in turning out the 10,000 tons, so that the State could be giving a bonus of 5s for every £ spent by the private employer in labor. The State now pays 24s in the £ on charitable aid to achieve the same resnlt as would be achieved by the resuscitation of the flax industry. The industry is just the thing for unskilled labor, and then look at the traffic it would give steamships and railways. Besides a new body of local consumers would be created, and the Government would get back its bonus in the shape of customhouse returns. Also, at the same time tbe industry would be the means, of clearing a lot of land at present lying waste, such as the Makerua Swamp."
