The Feilding Star, Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 9, 1895. THE DEAN CASE.
♦ This case is certainly one of the most remarkable that has come before the public for many years. In fact it bristles with surprises. The latest sensation is that Mr Meagher has opeuly confessed 6&&6 lie h.3.<Z isGGa g«U6y of conspiracy ; confirmed the statemeuts made by Sir Julian Solomans, and in an agony of repentant shame has resigned his seat in the House, and declared his intention to leave the country after he has made reparation to the law. However, he evidently does not intend to suffer alone, because he has demanded that Dean be arrested on a charge of perjury. The real question to be solved is the motive which inspired the conspiracy. An opinion is held that it was not so much the outcome of a belief in the innocence of the condemned man Dean, as an attempt to injure Judge Windeyer by taking advantage of a very indiscreet — to say. the least of it — remark made by tbe latter when addressing the jury who, afterwards, convicted the man Dean of haying attempted the life of his wife by administering poison. Whether that view is correct or the reverse, we are not in a position to affirm, but it appears to be worthy of some credence supported as it is by evidence which is growing stronger with every new development of the case.
