JERSEYS AS PROFIT COWS.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAB. Sib, —As there is always a certain amount of discussion as to the best breed of cattle for dairy purposes, it ■- may interest some of your readers to know the result of the years operations (ending Sept. 30th) with my Jersey herd of 37 cows. The total profit received for the year for butter and pigs (fed on sldm milk) was i-10 8s 8d per cow, exclusive of calves. I think this will be considered by most as a very satisfactory result, particularly as '. the cows haye received no artificial food , whatever, and the floods at the beginning of the winter put them at a great disadvantage for some months; also, a third of the number were spring heifers ":., , and further I have only recommenced my dairying the last three or four years and have had no time to cull my herd. It will thus be seen that there is something to be made out of dairying with the right sort of cows even in bad times, and perhaps it may help to continue the advocates for the " general purpose" cow that there are two sides to a question, and that although you may get a few shillings less for your steer calves, and your old cows after 12 or 14 years service, it is yet cheaper to breed foe butter if you want butter. I am, &c, Arthur Derker. Cloverdene, Feilding, Oct. 7th, 1895.
