The Hon J. Bryce informs the Wanganui Chronicle that the statement which has appeared in a number of papers that he intends to contest the Rangitikei seat at the next general election is entirely without foundation. One of our amateur bicyclists of whom there are quite a number, says he has been obliged to forego the pleasure of lifting his hat even to those ladies to whom he is most kindly disposed. The Minister of Justice seated that the Statute provided that if on examination duly qualified medical men were satisfied that a person was of sound mind and not likely to do harm to others, he could be discharged. There will be a sitting of the Feilding . S.M. Court to-morrow at 1.30 p.m. j Alterations are made to-day to Messrs Gorton and Son's stock sale at Bulls. The funeral of the late son of Mr H. Kerrison, of Palmerston North, will leave the Palmerston Hospital at 1 p.m. to-morrow. Yesterday afternoon Mr Heard, agent for the Collier bicycles, gave an exm'bibition of his firm's two-speed gear, which created a very favorable impression amongst the several cyclists who rode the machine. The change of gearing from 54 to 68 was quite imperceptible, and the advantages of such a patent are very apparent. One result of the boom in the Thames gold mines has special reference to the case of Leonard Harper, of Christchurch. The creditors are stated to have sold Harper's interest (a large one) in a certain mine for £'500. The same mine has recently been sold to an English syndicate for £250,000. A public meeting was held at Mangaweka on Saturday evening last to decide whether it was advisable to open a Lodge in connection with the Oddfellows Manchester Unity, or a Court of Foresters. A vote was taken when it was decided in favor of the Oddfellows by au overwhelming majority. The district has consented to the application, and will open the Lodge in tho course of a few days. At the enquiry into the fires which occurred on the premises at Hawera occupied by Mr Simons and owned by Mr Wilson, on two consecutive days, the jury returned a verdict that the fires were caused by incendiaries, but that there was no evidence to show who they are. A rider was added that the insurance accepted on the building and on Mr Wilson's furniture was greater than the value of the same warranted. The Bishop of Christchurch conducted service at Hokitika on Sunday last. The Guardian says that before proceeding with his evening discourse the Bishop remarked upon the morning collection. 'I never saw so much bad coin in my life, ' he said. 'To offer to the Church — the cause of God— money that the baker or the butcher would not accept, shocked him. The man who would do that sort of thing wanted the Grace of God— or three month's. He believed in straight giving. If the church cannot be run on such lines, better wind it up. He trusted that evening the special collection would bo suffic ient to pay off the bank over-draft. At the conclusion of the service, the Rev. Vicar announced that sufficient for the purpose (£73) had been collected that day.
