A social will be held at Awahuri this evening in aid of the library fund: A public meeting will be held in the Methodist Church this evening, commencing at 7.45. Messrs Abraham and Williams will hold their usual stock sale at Palmerston N. to-morrow. -» Mr Justice Prendergast will have completed his twenty one years' service in March next. An interesting notice appears to-day from J. H. Wiudleburn and J. P. Taylor, of Rangiwahia. Mr Geo. Johnston is now manager of the local branch of the New Zealand Clothing Factory. A resident of Napier has had some of the alleged gold stone from the Ruahine ranges tested, with a result entirely unsatisfactory. Mr Bastings has disposed of the Manchester Hotel to Mr Watts, who was landlord of the Deubigh Hotel at one time. A cheque was found by a little girl named Minnie Bowler and left at our office this morning. It has been returned to the person who drew it. This week the steamer Hawke's Bay is to ship 50,000 carcases of frozen meat at Napier. This will be the largest cargo yet sent from the district. The new edition of the rules and regulations for the Post and Telegraph Department will be issued before the end of the year. Last year 25,823,967 letters were posted and 27,344,369 delivered by the Postal and Telegraph Department ; an increase on the previous year of 79,922 and 1,003,665 respectively. The Wellington Cricket Association has agreed to the necessary guarantee in connection with the tour of the N.S.W. team, as requested by the New Zealand Cricket Council. The fancy dress Masquerade Carnival will be held at the Excelsior Skating Rink this evening. Ladies and gentlemen going in fancy dress are requested to leave their names with characters represented, with the doorkeeper. From a telegram received from Gisborne it would appear that Jules Anderson, the man found dead on the track, had committed suicide. It was ascertained that he had swallowed nitrate of silver, and a bottle was found in his possession. The following are the statistics of the Palmerston Hospital for the past month : — Admitted 17, discharged 20, at present in the hospital 20. During the month there were four deaths, eleven cures were effected, and in five cases there is marked improvement. The directors of the Feilding Permanent Building Society met yesterday afternoon, and the usual amount of business was done. The annual general meeting of the Society will be held at the end of this month when a mostgratifying report and balance-sheet will be presented. Batten, noticing the man, who was unable to release himself, with some little difficulty extricated him from his awkward predicament. — Mail. The total area of tho colony's land mado freehold by immediate purchase for cash, up to the end of March last, was 12,961,904 acres. There had been granted to local bodies and to persons 6,989,742 acres ; there had been sold on terms of deferred payment, which terms were completed, 1,097,442 acres; and there were held on such terms uncompleted and on perpetual leases 3,208,429 acres, making in all 24,257,414 acres alienated. The concert to be held in the new Town Hall at Cheltenham on Friday evening promises to be a success, as a large number of tickets have been disposed of. Tho programme will be contributed to by the following ladies and gentlemen : — Miss Hitch, Mrs A. McBeth, Misses Roe, Miss Diamond, Mrs Prior, Miss Fry, and Messrs Coventry, H. Templer, A. C. Matheson, D. Ross, A. G. Carty, Elkington, Bastings, H. S. Moss, Baynes, Fowler, Whishaw and Munro. Says the Woodville Examiner:— Mr Hoisted, the local manager for Messrs Cook and .Gray, on Saturday arranged with the suppliers to the Pinfold creamery that tho price will be for this season 2£d per gallon until the lst of January^ 1896, apd after that date 2,-} d per gallon until the close of the season in May. The standard is B*6, Messrs Cook and Gray accept all risk. The suppliers accepted these conditions in preference to the sliding scale submitted by the firm, under which they would havo been paid accordingly to the markets,

Important additions are made to the entries for Mr Carr's Feilding stock sale. As Mr Robinson's Waituna mail coach was coming into Feilding yesterday morning one of the horses dropped dead while passing through Davis' cutting. It is supposed the cause of death was heart disease. Yesterday, Irvine, a son of Mr Arnott, cut oft the great toe of his right foot when cutting firewood. He was brought from Apiti to Feilding where the youngster was successfully treated by Dr Monckton. A public meeting will be held in the schoolroom, Mangaweka, on Friday next, the 4th October, at half past seven in the eveniug, for the purpose of adopting a petition urging upon the Government the necessity of proceeding with the erection of a bridge across the Rangitikei river at Mangaweka without delay. We request the attention of our advertisers and subscribers to a notice which appears to-day over leader. Many of these accounts are for very small sums which in the aggregate make a considerable total and, also, many of them have been outstanding for more than a reasonable time. We request therefore that thej r be settled with all possible despatch. Since the new Insurance Tariff scale was issued to the company agents in various parts of the colony, many hitherto cheerful business men have become remarkably dull and, as it were, pre-oc-cupied. A wedding was celebrated last Tuesday at St. Peter's Church, Wellington, when Mr J. W. Ransou, of Waituna, was married to Miss Lilly Shewbridge, of that city. The bride wore a dress of ruby merveilleux, with the usual veil and orange blossoms, and was attended by Misses Shewbridge, Ranson and Brogan, all of whom wore pink nun's veiling dresses and white net hats with pink flowers. Messrs G. Ranson and H. Birch acted as groomsmen. The Palmerston Chess Club having challenged the . " Rangitikei" to play a match between the first teams of the Clubs ancl it has been arranged to play by wire on Saturday evening next. There will be nine players a side, and Palmerston will probably be represented by Messrs Sim, Friberg, Bagnall, Satchell, McCrea, Gregg, Elliot, O'Loughlen, and, Hankins, while the Marton team will be championed by Messrs Meldrum, Gifford, O'Loughlen, Remington, Pleasants, W. S. Marshall, H. H. Richardson, Coles and Easther, with Messrs Wilton and Skerman as a reserve.
