The Band Contest.

-•> I Per Press Association ! Timaru, Oct. 1. The fifth annual . brass bands contest was open at 7 o'clock to-night, and it took till 11 p. m. to play the first contest piece "Der Freischutz". Four bands— the Wellington Garrison, Timaru Garrison, Kaikorai and Oamara Garrison in that order—gave a splendid exhibition, and opinion varies greatly as to which the judse will place first. Tbe Invercarcill City, Oamara Navals, Christchurch Garrison, Duhedin Navals, and Canterbury Engineer bands come next-, and the Waimate, Stanmore and Sydenham bands follow. The judge's decision will not be known till Friday night.
