9 (Per Press Association.) Sydney, Sept. 25. The Marine Board found the loss of the steamer Catierthun was caused firstly by Captain Shannon navigating too close to the land on a stormy night and secondly by Mr Langfear, second officer, altering the course without authority, thus causing her to strike the rocks. The Board will deal with the latter's certificate on Monday. During a prize fight Plackie styling himself champion of New Zealand, received such a knocking about at the hands of Barker, of Queensland, that he was removed to the hospital in a critical condition. Several land ond building companies which reconstructed during the crisis are finding it impossible to pay the rases of interest agreed upon. The Sydney and Suburb'.n Permananfe Building Society obtained the sanction of the Supreme Court for the reduction of the interest from five to three per cent. Justice Manning, in granting the application, said the previous schemes and arrangements were founded on the hope of a revival in values, but the revival had not come. The days of high rates of interest, he said, were over and the sooner the colony recognised this the better. The Excelsior and St Joseph Land and Investment Building Societies are asking for similar instructions. Sailed — Manapouri, for Auckland.. Heavy rain is falling throughout the colony. Adelaide, This Day. Iv the Assembly the Public Salaries Reduction Bill passed through Committee. The minimum exemption was raised from £75 to .£IOO with a reduction of 5 per cent up to .£3OO, 12£ per cent to i'6oo and 25 above that. All the yearly increases were allowed. The Governor, Judges, Railway Commissioners, and a few others were exempted from the reductions. The Treasurer stated fresh, taxation would be necessary to make up the amount struck off. A motion in favor of a free breakfast table, with a compensating increase in land tax was negatived. Melbourne, Snpt. 25. The Government have received a cable from an eastern country (the name is withheld), asking for imformation regarding the gunboats which the Government are offering for sale.
