A Building Society's Troubles.
(Per Press Association). Melbourne, This Day. At the annual meeting of the Melbourne Permanent Building Society, the Directors' report showed the net profits had been hardly sufficient to meet the reduced rate of interest under the amended scheme. The Society had earned about 2^ per cent on current debentures during the year. Debentures to the value of £34,630 had been taken in exchange for properties in the Society's book at £34,120. From the present condition of the real estate market, the directors say they are convinced this is the only way to clear off their liabilities to debenture holders.
