A Steamer on Fire.

SEVERAL PASSENGERS BURNED TO DEATH. [Per Press Association] London, Sept 16. The steamer lona, from Leith to London, caught fire and burned for two hours. The passengers were asleep at the time, and when aroused a panic ensued. Many were injured in the rush for boats. Seven ladies perished, iucluding the stewardess, who was trying to rescue others. The fire started in the ladies' cabin. Forty-eight men were rescued. Jonas, a steward, states that the reason the unfortunate women were burned was that egress from the cabin was closed, and they were unable to force their way through the flames.
