(Per Press Association.) Auckland, Sept 16. Pick-pocketing is becoming frequent in Auckland. A dozen purses were taken from ladies at the Christian Endeavour Convention. A detected pickpocket, John Armstrong, was sentenced to six months imprisonment. He was recently from Sydney. Mr Hodgson, manager of the Northern Boot Company, has gone to Wellington to give evidence, and takes petitions from manufacturers, retailers and operatives against the proposed higher duties on the cheaper classes of children's and women's imported boots and shoes. Wellington, Sept 16. The City Council has decided to erect two salt water baths, one at each end of the town. The Swimming Club wanted them to go in for a large and elaborate central bath fitted up with hot and cold water, etc , but the expense would be too great. This Day. An elderly married woman named Margaret Torney, of intemperate habits, died suddenly during the night. The ship Westland, 98 days from Liverpool, is off the Heads, and tugs are towing her in. Christchurch, Sept. 16. Printers and tea-packet makers are petitioning the Government to increase the duty on tea imported in email packets. It is pointed out that this work finds employment for a large number of workers in Christchurch, one firm alone turning over 100.000 tea packets in a month. Napier, September 16. News has been received by the San Francisco mail that Mr J, N. Wilson, formerly a member of the New Zealand Legislative Council, is lying in a serious condition in England, suffering from cancer in the throat. Dunedin, Sept. 16. The number of men employed on the relief works has now been reduced to 120. Makterton, Sept. 16. The trout fishing season opened yesterday. Numbers of anglers were out, including several from Wellington, and some good hauls were made. One angler took a 10-pounder, measuring 27 in. from the Ruamahunga.
