Correspondence.
THE FIRE BELL TOWER. TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR. g IR) — I am much pleased to find that both Cr Bailey and the Mayor are in favor of tbe removal of this eyesore. | But why did not tbe former request you jto correct or explain your report of what be said on the subject at the last Council meeting instead of publicly ac- ! cusing me of misrepresenting him when i I merely quoted your report vernation, viz : *' He (Cr Bailey) " did " not approve of tbe removal of the bell tower." •' The Mayor was also opposed to removing it." In my opinion the Manchester Square improvements and the removal of the tower should have been considered as one object and funds raised for both purposes jointly. Mr James' estimate of £35 for the cost of removing the tower seems to me a high one, and I should be glad to know what a builder would say to it. There surely ought not be much difficulty in finding a site. Why not erect it on Denbigh Square and leave the adjoining land owners to protest against it if so inclined ? I am, &c, Saml. Goodbehere. Feildiug, 13th Sept., 1895.
