• (Per Press Association.) Chbistchubch, September 13. The charge of a breach of the Gaming Act against Neill and Co., of Dunedin, for distributing coupons with tea was dismissed, the S.M. stating there was not that element of chance in the scheme which would warrant a conviction. Dunedin, Sept. 12. The Dunedin Assembly of the Knights of Labour has passed a resolution protesting against the continuance of the present banking system and urging the establishment of a State Bank. Wellington, Sept. 13. The Secretary of the Hutt and Petone Syndicate, which is operating at Coolgardie, received a cable stating that gold has been struck in their reef, tbe Dark Horse Extended at 50ft. The reef is 4ft. thick. The steamer Maori, from Sydney to London with 90,000 e&re&ses of frozen sheep, passed through Cook Straits last night. She doeß not call at Wellington as at first arranged. Napier, September 13. Tbe case, Whittington v. Cohen, an action under the Local Bodies Contractors Act, claiming penalties aggregating £500, from Mr Cohen, 1 who is chairman of the Hospital Board, and who in tbe capacity of auctioneer sold goods to the institution, cloeed to day, after a three day's hearing. Auckland, Sept. 13. At a meeting of the Dairy Conference the local bodies agreed to adopt an amended regulation to appoint an inspector and also a veterinary surgeon.
