Fire on the Valley Road.

[From Our Own Correspondent] Pohangina, This Day. Mr J. Whittaker's dwelling house on the Valley Road was destroyed by fire at about 3 o'clock this morning. The cause of the conflagration was a defective chimney. The fire started first at about 12.30, but was suppressed, and it was supposed put out. The man employed and occupying a cottage near was left to watch. He fell asleep and when the fire started it had too strong a hold before being noticed. Mr Whittaker was away from home at the time, and Mrs Whittaker and her children escaped with but scanty clothing. Very few of her effects being saved. Insurance LIOO on the building, and LIOO on the furniture in the Phoenix Fire Office.
