AN IMPORTANT MATCH. (Per Press Association.) London, September 9. The cricket match between the EngUsh eleven and Stoddart's eleven began to-day. The latter batted first and scored 217 runs, and the English team had lost four wickets for 49, when stumps were drawn for the day. following are the scores :— Stoddart eleven (first «imngs)-Ward, 29; Brockwell, 29 ; Stoddart, 55 ; McLaren, 0; Brown, 24; Peel 49; Ford, 1* Lock Wood, 3; Briggs, 4; Phillips, not out, 0 ; Richardson, 12 ; extras, 11. Total, 217. _ _ A England (first innings) -Dr Grace, 0, Davidson, 8 ; Abel, 15 ; Sbewsbury, 12 ; Lilley, not out, 17; W.W. Bead, not out, 2. Total for four wickets, 49. In the innings of Stoddart s team Wooda took five wickets for 75, and Mold five for 88. Sept. 10. At tbe conclusion of the day's play England had lost 5 wickets for 57 runs. ° Sydney, Sept- 10. The Cricket Onncl has received a letter from the Marelybone Club stating that if tbe Australian team visits England nest season it will receive a hearty welcome from that club and the counties. The annual meeting of the Birmingham Cricket Club was held in the office of the secretary (Mr Edwin Sandeman) yesterdayafternoon. About 20 members were present. The following ofecers were elected :- President, Mi Dick ; vice-presidents, Messrs Bryce, Lowes and Harrison; captain, Mr Tompkins, secretary and treasurer, Mr Edwin Sandeman; match committee, Messrs L. Palmer, W. Hedges, and F. Barlow.
