• Races at Marton to-morrow and the day following. The Licensing Committee sat at Marton to-day. Mr C. Carr will hold his Eexfc sale at Feilding on Friday next. The rumour that Mr Henry Axup, late of Feilding, died at Greytown, is confirmed. Captain Edwin wired at noon : — N. to W. and S.W. gale, with rain within the next twelve hours ; glass fall. The funeral of the late daughter of Mr and Mrs W. G. Haybittle took place this morning, and was largely attended. Mr R. E. Beckett's next Halcombe stock sale has been postponed from the 12th to Thursday, the 19fch inst. A poll in connection with the loans for the Otara bridge approach and Mangarnako road will bo taken on Saturday next. An extraordinary general meeting of the Cheltenham Dairy Company will be held on Thursday evening at 8 o'clock, at Cheltenham. A warning to cyclists ! The Rev W. Woollass was fined £1 and costs (7s) at Invercargili, for riding his bicycle on the footpath. Everyone is invited to the Salvation Army Barracks to-morrow evening to hear Staff-Captain Edwards, from Wellington, who will lead the meeting. Many a good man has lived and died without knowing the true meaning of that dreadful word preter- pluperfect. 11 Where ignorance is bliss 'tis folly to be wise." Mr M. Drury, of the Endymion Hotel, Awahuri, advertises that all debts due to him must be paid forthwith otherwise they will be sued for without further notice. We are informed by Mr Dickson, the Secretary, that Mr De Lisle has presented the Feilding Cricket Club with a bat to be won by the highest scorer in two innings during the season. The thoroughbred horse " King John " (by King Cole — Wainui) is advertised to travel this season in the Manawatu and Pohangina districts, for further particulars see advertisement. The concert to be held on the 19th inst in connection with the Feilding Football Club, promises to be very successful, as favourable replies are being received from the vocalists asked to assist. Messrs Barraud and Abraham have admitted Mr W. H. Hartgill as a partner in their business of seed, grain, and general merchants at Danevirke, which will be under Mr HartgiU's management. Messrs Barraud and Abraham, agents for the New Zealand Shipping Company, notify that the Tongariro will leave Lyttelton in the 3rd October, which will be the last opportunity of forwarding wool and skins to catch the London salea opening on the 26th November. A warrant has been issued at Dnnedin for the arrest of Frederick Thomas Home on a charge of misappropriating £100 oi the funds of the Dunedin Finance, Loan, and Agency Company, of which he was for some time the Secretary. Home, who is well known in spotting circles, is missing. Complaints have been made to us of bicycle riders failing to give warning of their approach to other travellers whether on foot, horseback, or in vehicles, by striking their bells, or by having their lamps burning at night. We are quite sure that those concerned will take this hint and act upon it. We have received from Messrs H. I. Jones and Son, of Wanganui, two samples of Martin's photograph Christmas cards. They are singularly beautiful views of scenes on the Wanganui river, exceedingly well executed. Large selections may be seen at the establishments of Mr W. Carthew and Mr J. S. Milsou, of Feilding. The people of Feilding will learn with regret that Mr Eade has resigned ' the command of the local Fire Brigade. During his term of office Mr Eade has been diligent in the performance of his arduous duties, and when the necessity arose he on every occasion displayed admirable fitness as a leader. Says the Danevirke Advocate: — A piece of gold-bearing quartz found about three miles from the town, was brought in by a Tahoraite Native on Saturday morning. The proportion of gold was not large, but one or two townsmen propose to visit the scene of the find and make a careful search. An experienced miner gives it as his opinion that payable gold is to be found where the specimen came from. The committee appointed to carry out the social and dance in connection with the Manchester Lodge of Oddfellows, met in Mr Jackson's shop last evening, to make arrangements, when it was decided to hold the social in the Foresters' Hall on Wednesday, 25th inst. Double tickets to be 3/6, extra lady Is. Mr Haybittle's band to be engaged for the occasion. Much interest is shown in to-night's debate between Palmerston and Feilding. The visitors have the advantage in having won their debate withSandon on this subject three years ago ; but our representatives have the moral power of conviction, backed by a careful study of the subject. We remind the public that admission is sixpence for the library furnishing fund, and that the debate begins at 7.30 p.m. sharp. A nine-year old boy named Henry H addon was killed at the hills at the back of Tinakori road on, Saturday afternoon last. Deceased was on the hills with bis brother Charles and two other boys gathering firewood. Charles Haddon and another boy named John Jameson had dug out a stump, and afterwards sat down and put their feet upon it. At this time deceased was a little way down the hill lighting a fire, and the log giving wav, rolled down the hill over the deceased, who was struck on the head and Killed instantly. A very snecessf ul meeting of the Band of Hope was held at Buunythorpe on Tuesday evening. The meeting was in charge of Mrs Dixon, who very ably fulfilled the duties of chairwoman. Excellent recitations were given by Miss Stewarts, * The Master has come ' ; Miss Clevely, ' The Market Basket ' ; Miss M. Major, ' Suppose ' ; Mr Smith, * Drunkard's Wife '• ', and Peter Larsen, • Psalm of Life ' ; solo, Mr F. Dixou ; duet, Miss Little and Mr C. Nissen j addresses by Mrs Little 'Facts and Figures,' Mrs Matheson ' Some other children.' The interest in these temperance meetings is well sustained in Bunnythorpe.
