■♦ We are told by the New Zealand Trade Beview that although there has naturally been some feeling of tension during the recent discussion on the Bank of New Zealand and Banking Act, yet the atmosphere is now cleared and we have returned to the status quo ante There is no change in the bank rates, and the Building Companies are giving 4^- per cent, but the demand is not very active, consequently only a moderate amount of business is being done. The total ehiptnenta of gold
from this colony to the 30th June, 1895, represent a value of £50,707,330. The exports for the first six months of 1895 show, as compared with that for for the corresponding of 1894, an increase from Auckland of over fifty per cent, an increase of a little over one per cent from Otago, and a decrease from all other fields The totals are : 1894, £482,492 ; and for 1895, £518,492. It is anticipated that the export during 1896 will far exceed that of preceding years. On the whole, the outlook may be considered satisfactory, and as it is extremely probable the current prices for wool will not only be maintained, but be increased, we ruay confidently expect better times, with a revival of the spirit of enterprise in all legitimate industries.
