Wanganui Education Board.
o (Per Press Association.) Wanganui, Sept. 9. The Education Board met today. Present — Messrs Carson (chairman), Sanson, Bridge, Fry, Ross, Hurley, F. Piraui, M.H.It. The building grant has been overdrawn £1503. The chairman explained that owing to the imperative opinion from the Inspector's doctor it was found necessary to relieve him at once and Mr Carter, of Feilding, was appointed to take Ins place , until the Board met. Mr Bindou was grauted leave of absence on full pay to the lsb of February. The Board went into committee to ' consider the appointments Mangaweka — Decided to point out 1 that the Board cannot agree to the con--1 tinuation of teacher's appointment. Ashurst — Mr Buckler's resignation was accepted. Five names are to be i sent forward for the vacancy. I Terrace End— lt was decided to api point a male assistant. Tiritca — Mr Lilly was appointed to , open the school pending a permanent appointment. I Building Grant— Mr Bridge made a j statement with reference to the building I grant. He said he had gone exhaustively into the matter of the allocation of the building grant by the Government, and, in answer to the statements made 1 in the House in reply to Mr Pirani by 1 the Minister for Education, he submitted f the following facts : — During the four i years from January Ist, 1890, to Dec--1 ember 31st, 1894, in Auckland the in- ■ crease in number of schools was 63 and 1 the increase in the roll number 2690. The building grant allotted was at the : rate of £"268 3s for school increase or £6 ' 3s per scholar increase. In Taranaki : the increase of schools was 12, the increase in the roll number 1008, the rate of grant per school i-225 7s, and per : scholar £2 7s. In Wanganui —Increase schools, 18 ; increase roll, 1506 ; rate per school, £406 4s ; per scholar, £4 Bs. In Wellington — Increase schools, 14 ; increase roll, 1919 ; rate per school, L 733 , 6s; per scholar, L 5 3s. The Rev. Mr Ross and several other members expressed themselves very strongly with reference to the inequalities which existed in the allocation vote, especially emphasising the need of a much larger grant to enable the Wanganui Board to meet the demands of the out districts.
