THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT BILL.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR. Sir, — Few persons get the opportun- ; ity of seeing the Local Government Bill, ' and still fewer have the time or ability to examine and get the " hang " on all its bearings. I for one am, therefore, much gratified at the able and pertinent ' analysis, so far as it has gone, which appeared in your leading article of the 7th inst. It is so palpably an attempt to burden the land with Commissioners, I Inspectors, and other paid officials, and | the strings are so apparent which con- ; nect a great portion of the power and '. patronage with a Minister that I strongly ; urge members of local bodies to read ' your exposition and have broad sheets struck off for distribution. Let them look alive and expostulate for themselves, and not trust to a Parliament | that is composed of men who cannot oppose the Ministry upon a Government ' question without risking a sacrifice of ' their twenty pounds a month. Shame- ! ful as it appears, it is so ! and we can- . not blink our eyes to the fact. I am, &c, F. A. Monckton.
