MANCHESTER SQUARE IMPROVEMENTS.

TO THE EDITOE OF THE STAR. Sir, — The following is a copy of a letter which I wrote and addressed to Mr W. A. Sandilands as Mayor, in reply to printed a circnlar, dated sth August last, which I received from him as Mayor, requesting payment of my " promised subscription of £5 " towards the above improvements, but to ichick I have received no reply or acknowledgement whatever. (Copy letter.) The Bungalow, Feilding, Aug. Bth, 1895. Dear Sir, —Re Manchester Square improvements — My promise of £5 subscription towards these improvements, as appeared in a letter of mine published in the Feilding Star, and made to yourself personally, was on condition that part of the improvements should consist in the removal of the bell-tower scaffolding now standing on the Square. Your reply to this was that the matter could not very well be gone into until the arrangements for the erection of the Municipal Buildings had been com* pleted, but in the published reports of the meetings of the Council I have not noticed that any reference has been made to the subject of my objection. I, I however, enclose my cheque for £5 on this understanding, viz., That £2 of it be applied towards the general improvements of the Square as already agreed to by the Council, and £3 to be retained and applied by the Council towards the expense of removing the bell-tower — provided that if the Council refuses to accept the £3 on these terms the £3 shall be returned to me. I am, yours faithfully, Saml. Goodbehere. W. A. Sandilands, Esq., Mayor, Council Chambers, Feilding. Now, sir, I venture to say no one could bo found to deny that this letter was de;serving of some direct acknowledgement when I am not aware that it has even been brought to the notice of the Council. I observe, however, that in your report of Thursday's meeting of the Council the Mayor expresses his non-approval of the bell-tower being removed. I am, etc., Saml. Goodbehfre. Feilding, 7th September, 1895.
