The Uriwera Country.
(Per Press Association). Wellington, Sept. 8. A deputation, comprising about 20 young prominent members of nair>v.s :r the Uriwera Country, waited on \U>- I' ; mier yesterday afternoon on nn'r-c r. j nected with the Uriwera Coin v. i h v 1 pointed out that they desired n> >.-t up a committee to govern their o.su internal affairs. There would be various hapus ; but the natives did not wish to close the country, and were willing that roads, admitting of the tourist traffic be constructed. The Premier congratulated the deputation on the friendly spirit expressed, and promised to give the natives every assistance with respect to prospecting in the Uriwera country. He thought the natives should undertake that themselves, and Government would send an expert to assist them. He promised to withdraw the constabulary from that vicinity at an early date, but two or three constablps would be stationed there, and the law would have to be observed by the natives and Europeans alike. Later in the afternoon the deputation was entertained at the Premier's residence, where several hakas of a mild character were danced.
