Volunteer Items.
The Manchester Rifles paraded for inspection by Lieut Colonel Newall last night in the Volunteer Hall. Notwithstanding that bad weather, sickness, and the counter attractions of the concert kept several members away, yet there was a good muster and some excellent work was done. Before the drill was commenced Colonel Newall called Volunteer T. Evans to the front and pinned the long service medal on Volunteer Evan's left breast. The Colonel said he had great pleasure in presenting this decoration inasmuch that Volunteer Evans had a good record, being regular in his attendance at parades, and in every respect was a first-class volunteer. At the conclusion of the parade Captain Kirton called for three cheers for Volunteer Evans, which were most heartily given. A meeting of the members was then held when three candidates as young members were ballotted for. Two were rejected, and one accepted, the two unsuccessful candidates being rather young. The balance-sheet and report of the shooting committee was read and adopted, and the old members of the committee were re-elected, In the Defence report of Colonel Fox the Manawatu Mounted Rifles, Wellington Guards, Manchester Rifles and Palmerston North Rifles, are all described as good, and the Royal Rangitikei Rifles as very good. In the Wellington District 1042 volunteers capitated — about 84 per cent. Colonel Fox will probably inspect the corps on this coast in about eight weeks time. —^
