(Pee Press Association.) j Auckland, September 2. The criminal sessions opened to-day, Justice Conolly's remarks being brief. There are 24 indictments. In the case of Frederick James Hale, attempted suicide, no bill was found. John McAlister McLeod, for arson, was sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment and ordered to pay L3O compensation, the Judge saying it was no excuse on the part of accused to get himself excited with drink. Frank Messenger, for attempted suicide, was bound in a surety of L 25 to come for sentence when called upon. For horse stealing at Tauranga, Whataki Ngauhae was sentenced to six months' and John Ross for breaking and entering at Whakatane, two years.
