An Extraordinary Occurrence.
ENCOUNTER OF A VESSEL WITH WHALES. (Per Press Association). Sydney, Sept. 1. Arrived, Handa Isle, from Mercury Bay, iv a damaged condition. At noon on August 24th two immense whales approached the vessel. One dived under her and the other struck the vessel amidships with such tremendous force that several planks were stove in and smashed. The water began to make at the rate of a foot an hour. The captain then decided to throw overboard the deck cargo of timber with a view of raising the whole above the water line. The pumps were kept going throughout the afternoon and night. Next day, the vessel being lightened, the water was got under and the breach stopped by pillows and hides. The water was then easily checked. The last seen of the whale was its sinking tail formost, a mass of blood, and had it not been that the vessel had a timber cargo it is believed she would have foundered.
