The Late Fire in Hawera. LATER PARTICULARS.

(Per Press Association). Haweba, August 30. Altogether seventeen buildings were destroyed, and a great gap has been made in the business portion of the town. A sensation was caused by the rumour that A. Turner (a well-known and resspected builder) and W. J. Caverhill (Secretary of the Waitara Freezing Works) were missing, and that they were boarders at the Egmont Hotel. This morning the remains of two human bodies were found. Only a few bones were left, but it is certain that they arc the remains of the unfortunate nie# referred to. The Fire Brigade were quickly in attendance, but owing to the want of water were unable to do much good. Li tile or nothing was saved from the buildings. This Day. The Premier telegraphed his sympathy to the townspeople. The Star was published as usual, but in small size yesterday afternoon. The inquest was opened this morning. The evidence, so far, shows that Messrs Campbell and Jewell, Smith's employes, were taking stock when a kerosene lamp fell and exploded in the show window among the millinery, and the effect was such that all efforts were at once useless. It comes out that Jewel was not sober, but there is nothing at present to show that this had auy effect in causing the accident or in preventing the extinction of the fire.
