• The Manchester Rifles will parade this evening. An attempt is to be made to obtain an artesian water supply at Sandon. Messrs Gorton and Son hold a stock sale at Feilding to-morrow. The Herald reports that whitebait has bceu caught iia the Mauawatu during the past three weeks. The Examiner states that s-lieep and cattle stealing is very prevalent in the Woodville district. The Wellington Board of Education has passed a series of resolutions affirming the principle of inspection of private schools by Board officials. Mr F. S. Woollams, chemist, advertises that he has now ready poisoned wheat for tho destruction of sparrows, vermin, and other pests. At the S-M. Court this morning the police applied for a prohibition order against Henry Sanderson to be in force in Fcikling, Cheltenham, Fowlers', Bunnythorpe, Apiti, Colyton, Awahuri, Saudon, Bulls and Haleombe, Mr Sandilands and Mr Kirtou. J's.P., were on the Bench. The application was granted. The head master in his report presented to the Colyton School Committee on Friday evening last complained of the poor attendance at the school lately, and stated that sickness of the children, or of those at home, together with the bad weather wo have had, accounted for most of the poor attendance. Bub there are some who should attend better than j they do, and it is his intention in future j ! to place every child who fails in the j monthly examination and whose attend--1 ancc ))hh not been satisfactory or satis- i factorily explained, into a lowet class.
The members of the Committee of the Feilding Athletic Club met last evening in Mr SherwilPs office, and adopted the report and balance-sheet. There was a large attendance at the dinner in the Salvation Army Barracks last evening, also, at the public meeting afterwards. John Cobbe expects to show, to-mor-row, one case of English trimmed millinery, in which will be some of the latest designs purchased in London to his special order. Mr G. AuyoUj chairman of the Gladstone Small Farm Block, has been informed by Mr Baker, the Commissioner of Crown Lands, that the ballot will be held early in September. A cauvass has been begun in Oamaru for funds in aid of the rifle gathering to be hold there next February. It was stated that Mr John McLean had given the use of his grounds. It is expected that over 200 rifle-men will attend. Considerable interest was exhibited in Feildiug last evening in the joint committee's report as submitted to the House yesterday aftevnoou on the position of the Bank of New Zealand, and several gentlemen anxiously waited for the extra published by the " Star " giving a resume of the Bank's position and the Government's proposals. In connection with the Feilding Horticultural Society, it has been suggested ; by a resident who was always a large exhibitor on former occasions, that it would be advisable to exclude all possible competitors from tlie management of the affairs of the society, so that perfect independence could be secured. The idea is a good one. In our advertising column Miss Ross tenders a frank apology to the playgoiug public of Feilding for the disappointment they had when the company promised to appear in " Caste.', The fault did not arise from any act of Miss Ross, but from circumstances connected with other members of the company for which she was in uo way responsible. The Company produce the drama of '" Queen's Evidence " here on Monday, September 9th. .
