AUSTRALIAN OPINION OF THE BANK.

fPer Pre?s Xssociulion ) Sydney, This Day. The Herald says the Bauk of New Zealand is not yet out of its troubles which are apparently of a deeper origin than was supposed. Doubtless they have been intensified by the low prices of produce and probably had the extent of the losses better known a year or two back the Government would not have given the guarantee ; but, having done so, it seems necessary to follow it up on the line recommended by the committee. The severance of the Estates Company will free the Bank from the dead assets which have so long kept it down. Fresh capital will furnish resources for business of a sounder nature. It is hard on the shareholders to have to again provide more capital, but they will probably regard it as the lesser of two evils.
