The entries at Messrs Abraham and Williams' stock sale at Colyton yesterday were about the average, and thc attendance was very good. Thc prices realised were well up to recent quotations. Store wethers brought up to 9s sd, old ewes aud lambs, 4s 6d ; milch cows sold fairly well at £4 f-s, £"> 9s and £o 15s ; weaners sold from 20s to 25s 6d. At a meeting of the Paimerston North Borough Council last evening, a letter was read from Mr W. M. Hitchcock, ©1- , ectrician, on thc proposal to light the town by electricity. Mr Hitchcock estimated tlie cost of providing electricity for lighting the streets aud private houses at X'2,050 and the cost of maintenance at i.'500 per annum. He also calculated the revenue from private lighting would be £'600 a year. At Paimerston yesterday afternoon tlie Revs Young, Thompson, and Quiufcrell, the Captain of the Salvation Army Messrs Leary, Henry aud Grace waited on Colonel Hume and requested that remedial measures sbould be adopted to suppress tbe immorality which existed in that town. The deputation stated several bouses of ill-fame existed, that gambling was rife, and that the Licensing Act was being continuously broken. The Paimerston N. Borough Council have passed a resolution as follows: — " Tbat in view of tbe increasing tendency for formation of trade monopolies, under tbe delusive name of co-operation or co-operative storcs.Syt is desirable thattliis Council appoint a Committee to consider thc best means to check tbis growing evil." A resolution was also passed requesting Mr Pirani, M-H.R., to communicate with the Government with a view to acquiring the estate of Sir J. Prendergast for thc purpose of sub-dividing into wmall holdings. On Monday evening a group of buildings, comprising live shops, situated in Main street, Foxton, near the Post Office, was destroyed by lire. Only two were iu occupation at thc time of the lire. One was used as a billiard-room by Mr 11. Bradcock, ami tbe table was insured for LiGO. Another shop was being utilised as a dwelling hy a family named Coles, and some flax belonging to Mr Coley was stored in another. The Post Office adjoining was saved only v.ith great difficulty.— Staudard.
