SHEARERS" DISPUTES. THE WINE INDUSTRY. MURDER OF A FRENCH TRADER. THE COLLIERY FIRE. SUPPRESSING GAMBLING DENS. (Per Press Association.) Melbourne, August 27. At the annual meeting of the Pastornlists Association, the report stated that although the Shearers' Union had abandoned the fight for the present, the Executive had plainly stated its intention of resuming hostilities when it was strong enough ond wanted to do so. Baron Mailer reported strongly on the proposed introduction of American phylloera resisting vine. Stocks and cuttings he says, are only a resistant to a certain extent, and it is impossible to really dis infi et the pest. It may exist, though unobservable under ordinary circumstances. The only safe method, he says, is to get the seeds of resisting kinds and to raise stocks for grafting. Last year he ob taiued a large quantity of such seed from America and France, and the stocks were now available for growers. The Chief Justice grauted the necessary order for the compulsory winding up of the City of Melbourne Bonk. Sydney, August 27. News from the New Hebrides reports the murder of Francois Ross, a wellknown French trader, who was shot b} T the natives of Santo Island. The warship Scarff is investigating the affair. The position of the fire in the Seaham mine is unchanged. The West Wallsend Company will execute the coal orders bold by the Seahanu Company, and the miners have generously agreed to share work with the Seaham men until the fire is subdued. The police visited all the tote-betting shops in Sydney and warned the occupiers to close immediately, or they ■would arrest everybody ou the premises. This intimation had the effect of closing all these places to-day. Perth, August 27. The Administrator of the Government has received a cable message from Sir William Robiuson stating that he has resigned the Governorship
