FIRE-RAISING.
We arc informed by the Manawatu Daily Times tbat an uneasy i'ooling has been created in Palmcrstou North by the recent fires, on account of their frequency aud the fact that they have all occurred during the early hours of the morning. Tho impression among many is that they arc the work of some " fire-raiser " who is pursuing a systematic course of incendiarism, and it is suggested that a vigilance committee should be quietly formed to keep careful watch. It is tolerably certain that if such a miscreant is discovered at woik he will have little chance of being tried by a jury. The Insurance Companies have also taken the alarm, aud appointed a committee to visit Palmerstou to advise as to what action should be taken, in order to prevent, if possible, a re-currcnee of these fires.
