THE ANNUAL SPORTS and RECREATION GROUNDS.

TO THK EDITOR OF THE STAR. Sir, — From the advertising columns of the Star I learn that there is to be a meeting of the Sports Committee on Wednesday next and the annual meeting of the Athletic Club on the 4th September. There have been sundry improvements made to the grounds by the Borough Council Committee since last Boxing Day— namely, a drain partly carried out which prevents a considerable quantity of water from overspreading the Oval, the back fence repaired and partly renewed, conveniences such as more seats for visitors, &c, to the lawn, and the shelter trees attended too. I would point out that as the annual sports have become so popular, and as there, is not much else dove in t ! ie week after Christinas bes- ides jauntini about and pleasure seeking, that the time has arrived when a second day's sport wonld be a success. Several events for cyclists, and other events to be decided upon, also challenge.", and events undecided upon the first day, could take place, so as to make up a limited programme to finish aboafc 4 o'clock p.m., t) allow visitors, and others, ample time to reach their homes. An advantage of a second day, I think, would be that some of the visitors would come to remain throughout the two days, and if on Boxing Day the weather did not suit, and the sports bad to be put off until next day, the attendance of visitors would be greater, and the second day's sports could be carried out on the following day, according to circumstances. I am, &c, F. J. Knox. Feilding, August 28th, 1895.
