Another Fire in Palmerston.
At four o'clock on Sunday morning a fire broke out in the buildings known as Hankins', the property of Mr J. H. Hankins, solicitor, fronting the Square. From the Standard we learn the fire originated on the ground floor at the rear of the shop occupied by Mr J. Davidson, who slept on the premises, and was the first to notice the fire and give the alarm. The premises were occupied by Messrs J. Davidson (music dealer), E. Olsen (tailor), F. Butler (bookbinder), Clarkson (butcher), R. Highrun and Co. (umbrella makers). Nearly all the belongings were removed from the shops by the Ssilvnge Corps, with the exception of Mr Davidson's pianos--, etc., which were destroyed. The Fire Brigade succeeded in confining the flames to Ilankin's buildings, and prevented the sprend to Messrs J. R. Montague's auction mart, D. Giorgi's, J. Colville'b=, De Luen'a, and the Mutual Insurance offices, but the goods were considerably damaged in removal and by water. Messrs De Luen Bros, estimate 1 their Joss at and Mr Hankins is a considerable loser. Mr W. Dixin, wl.o was helping the brigade on the verandah of Ilankin's building:;, had one of hie legs severely cut. The insurances were as follow:— Mr J. Herbert Hankins — £600 on the building in the Phoenix office; £800 on library in the Sun office Mr J. Hugli — .£4OO on building in Liverpool, London and Globe. Messrs De Luen Bros.— £loo on stock in the National. Mr J. Davidson— £lso on stock.
