A Colliery on Fire.

(Per Press Association.) Sydney, This Day. The fire in the Seaham colliery had a strong hold when discovered, and at times these was a fall of the roof between three and four hundred yards in the main drive which was on fire. The danger from the roof, the dense smoke, heat, and the foul air made it impossible to check the progress of the flames, aud as the fire was burning fiercely and gaining ground rapidly it was seen to be hopeless to fight. All the miners were withdrawn, and the pit closed with a view to smothering the fire. Dense volumes of smoke are now issuing from the mine.
