THE NEW ZEALAND ESTATES COMPANY.

We think it is a great mistake of members to allow party feeling to be introduced in the matter of the Bank of New Zealand and the New Zealand Estates Company. There is not the slightest occasion for it, and positive inqjury may result both to the institution and to the colony. Of course it is only the " small fry " who have made this bluuder because our readers will have observed that when tho Premier asked for a Select Committee he was singularly guarded, even while admitting that certain information which he should have received from j the Bank authorities, had been with held, and on the other hand the Leader of the Opposition was equally cautious when he intimated that he would not oppose the motion. In the Legislative Council the same good taate obtained although, the Hon. George McLean made a remark somewhat to the same effect as that of the Premier. All sensible men must exclaim against any such cry being started as " tbe country is in danger" especially ac the preseafc time whoa so much depends on the fostering of that feeling of confidence iv the future which has been " budding in the spring time " and is likely to produce good fruit in a little while if given a reasonable opportunity. It must not be forgotten that the request to aj> pomt the Committee emanated from the authorities of tho Bank who had, no doubt, excellent reasons for so doing. Had they feared the close investigation of a Parliamentary Committee they certainly would not have asfepd for it, and where they have coufidenee the public surely need not he afraid. _________„„„_
