His trousers had been torn away, and he had no hat. On Tuesday they became desperate, and waded through the snow, np to the armpits, on to the main range. They had nothing to eat since Sunday night. Lodder became exhausted, and Smith and Salisbury carried him until Smith himself collapsed. They left Lodder covered up with leayes, and made another attempt, but failed through exhaustion, and had to he in tbe snow all night. Next day they managed to crawl to a house, Salisbury having to lift Smith over a fence. This honse was Knutsen's. At the inquest on the body of .Lodder, Knutsaid the men did not lead him to believe that the condition of Lodder was critical, and he did not trouble much about him as he expected he was following them.
