Counties Conference.
(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION) Wellington, August 15. The Conference expressed strong disapproval of the Public Tenders and Contracts Bill so far as it related to carrying out the contracts of local bodies. It was resolved that where a county contains small townships — viz., condensed townships not town districts— provision be made for the constitution of special rating districts not being coextensive with ridings' boundaries for water supply, street formation, aud drainage, and that such special rating extend over 5 to 7 years. Further resolutions were carried : That one-fourth of the revenue derived from the sale of any timber on Crown lauds be held to be the property of the major local body ; That Government be urged to place a sum on the estimates to enable the Public Trustee to pay rates due on native lands. A committee was appointed to revise the resolutions passed at the Conference, and a deputation was appointed to present a report of the .proc_ediags to the Premier. The Conference then adjoured until the Local Government Bill is introduced.
