Christchurch Synod.
(Per Press Association.) Ciiristchurcii, August 14. The annual session of the Synod of tho Diocese of Christchurch was opened to-day. Bishop Julius, in his address, spoke at considerable length upon matters of diocesan interest. He also referred to the attempt to disestablish the Welsh Church, sayiug that the attempt had failed and that the Church was safe for a time at any rate. The Church and State, he said, had their separate and independent functious, but their partnership had been of iufinite advantage to both. Speaking oj^ the subject of religious unity, he referred to the recent conferences of the Established Church of Scotland and of the Methodist communions in Australia as signs that Christian men were beginning to realise the sinful folly of division. The Papal letter to the English people marked distinct and definite advance, and there was room for hope that the estrangement which had existed for centuries among the different Churches might yet come to an end.
