A Perilous Voyage.
THE STEAMER PORT CHALMERS STRUCK BY AN ICEBERG. (Per Press Association). Adelaide,' This Day. The steamer Port Chalmers, 2667 tons, from London to Sydney has arrived here in a battered condition. The bowsprit, cutwater, and figu£ehea.d are, all gone ; her bow plating is strained for 20 feet from the w.ater line upwards and % boat stove in. On July 27th, after rounding the Cape she came into collision with an immense icebei*g. A aundred tons of ice fell on the starboard side, and the ship was almost capsized, rhe bows were stove in, the stem smashed and as she was making water 'ast the situation -became critical. The joats were serving out ready to abandon ihe vessel, bufi : by "keeping 1 tiie' pitmps joing and patching up the holes she nauaged to keep afloat. Afterwards she met tempestous weather, and alto;ether those on board- had a most disressicg experience. The steamer was mly saved by the collision bulk- heads emaimng intact. She has a large conignment of dynamite.
