Pohangina County Couucil.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the above was held at the office, Pohangina, on Saturday afternoon. Present — Crs H. Dicken (chairman), H. Fraser, W. Brown, C. ISelby, E. Bell, A. Wagstaff, W. Vicary. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.. Correspondence was received and dealt with as follows : — From Dr Johnston, asking that the formation on Main Ridge road be continued for another ten chaius to his gate on section 35, Block XV. From J. Cottrall, stating that he had not received notice that his tender was accepted for Apiti drain until he had received other employment and asked that his deposit be returned. From C. T. Lloyd, applying for lease of reserve at Oroua ford. — JSIot to be let at present as some of totara may be required for bridge. From Captain Turner, stating the Council's offer of £ for £ for felling and clearing on Pohangina Valley road leading from the river to the Delaware block, had been submitted to the Surveyor-General for consideration. From Superintendent of Electric Lines, stating telephone to Port's could only be erected on payment of £60, actual cost. From D. H. MoKenzie, account for bushfelimg ; a'so, account for bushfelling due to H. Fraser. From Treasury, stating the County loan of £1000 for construction of bridge over Oroua river had been provisionally approved. From Secretary Kiwitea County Council, applying for interest on loan money due (£lB6 9s). From J. Harvey, asking permission to fell road line opposite section 30, Block 6. — Granted ; payment to be made when road is formed. From P. Murphy, account for work o£ diverting and opening creek blocked np by Council's contractor. From J. Clark, asking permission to fell bush on road line running through section 18, Block VI. — Granted ; payment to be made when road formed. From Receiver of Land Revenue, voucher for £55 5s 2d, ordinary thirds (Pohangina riding) accrued to April 30th, 1895. From L. Osbensen, offering to clear 10 to 13 chains Weka street, Pohangina, for 10s per chain. From Land and Income Tax DcJ partment, voucher for subsidy of £279 0s 9d. From M. Ban*, Lower Ilutt, asking if road is made, or being made, to section XT, Block VI. Pohangina. From Commissioner of Crown Lands, stating the cemetery trustees for cemetery reserve in Pohangina would have to be approved at a public meeting. From the following re change of names on rate roll : — From A. Kendall to Grice Bros, and Young. for section 5, Block V, Pohangina ; Walter Stetton iii place of E. Bugg for section 53, Valley road, Pohangina ; McNie and Sons in place of A. H. Finnis for section 13, Block V, Pohangina ;J. f ,Gr. Paulsen in place of D. Dunbar for section 59, Block XI f I ; F. S. Guy in place of S. Graham for section 2, township Apiti. — Alterations agreed to. The Committee, consisting of Crs. Diokin, Selby, and Wagstaff, appointed to report re a cemetery site, recommended the proposed site, being pait of bridge reserve, No. 54, situate on the southern bank of the Beehive creek. From W. A. Sandilands, asking what money was paid into court, which was due on Goodwin and McDermott's contract. From M. T. Holland, Coal Creek, asking the Council to fell road .line opposite his section. Mr Ronberg waited on the Counoil ■with reference to two culverts and drains being tilled up with silt, and was informed ths water would be taken away and the cause of complaint removed. Cr Vicary presented a petition from settlers in the Mangoira Coal Creek Block, requesting that a loan of .£ISOO be raised to form and metal the Table Flat road, commencing at the end of present metal. Proposed by Cr Dickin, seconded by Cr Selby, That the secretary be instructed to write to the chief clerk of General Post Office, asking that the name of the post office now known as " Palmers " be changed to " Pongaru," as the present name is liable to be confused with Palmerston, and if the name of the County is added then letters are carried to the Pohangina township. The suggested new name is the native name of that part of the district. — Carried. Resolved That the Engineer be.instructed to ascertain the exact boundaries, and to calculate the exact area of level land available for the purposes of a cemetery on bridge reserve No 64, Block K. Resolved, That the Council not haying received any reply to their letter of 15th ult., the Engineer be instructed to write again to Messrs Adsett and Roberts asking them to repair the road from Mr Sinclair's gate to their mill within fifteen days, otherwise legal steps will be taken to compel them to do sd. Proposed by Cr Beli, seconded by Cr Dickin, That the Engineer be instructed to lay off about ten chains on the Main Ridge road from the present formation to Dr Johnston's property ; also, from London's road to Capt. Johnston's gate ; also, .£IOO be spent in forming Lundon'a road past Mr Holland's. Tenders to te called as soon as possible.— Carried. Resolved, That applications for the position of temporary roadman in the Pohangina riding be called for. Ap,p}i; cations to be in at next meeting. Revolved, That Sinclair not having signed^his lease of reserve 78, Block IX, fresh tenders be called for lease of same. Resolved, That the Engineer be instructed to have the Ferry road put in repair so as to make it safe for wheel traffic, cost not to exceed about £5. Resolved, That in, view of Thos. Taylor being discharged by the late' Road Board, the Engineer be now granted permission to employ him as casual roadman in Mangaone riding. Proposed by Cr Fraser, seconded by Cr Brown, That the Engineer be instructed to call for tenders for forming and culverting the road ia front of Mr Phillpott's property, tenders to be in by next meeting of the Council. — Carried. Resolved, That the Engineer be'instructed to fence as cheaply as possible, with" barbed wire and posts, the willows placed in the drain in tho Pohangina township. Proposed by Cr Vicary, seconded by Cr Bell, That the Engineer call tenders for the following works iv Maugapikopiko riding, to be in by next meeting of the ■ Council : — For metalling the Hangapikopiko road, to the amount of -£"50 ; for forming. and. metalling o0 chains of the Uppermost Cross road ; for forming the • Uppermost Cross road east, 90 chains j
and the Main Kidge road, 65 chains.— Carried. .. Proposed by Cr Vicary, seconded by Cr Bell, That the Engineer be instructed to call tenders for the approach to the Apiti bridge on tho western side of the river, tenders to be in by the next meeting of the Council— Carried. Proposed by Cr Vicary, seconded by Cr Bell, That the secretary take the necessary steps to raise the loans for the Mangoira Coal Creek Block as asked for by the petitioners of the said Block. The advertising for the Main Cross road to be inserted in the Feilding Star as requested— Carried. Resolved, That the Engineer bo allowed to employ a draughtsman for oneweek, or more if required, in connection •with the extra work entailed by the erection of the Apiti bridge - Carried Resolved, That the secretary write to the Commissioner of Crown Lands ask- | ing him to get a plan of the reserves in | thfs County and have the same vested in this Council. That he be informed the Council is willing to pay cost of extra labor in connection with the same. Resolved, That the Council's balance sheet for 1894-95 be advertised in the Advocate only. Mr G. Lyne waited on the Council and complained of the inconvenience caused him by sheep being driven through hi 3 property. He was informed the Council could "assist him, and lie was advised to either stop them altogether or charge a toll. This was all the business and the Council ad jour nod ■
