MATTERS POLITICAL.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR. Sir, — The JMarton Mercury of the 7th instant said " A very lethargic spirit h;is latterly been displayed by the bulk of the members of the Liberal Association." It is no wonder seeing, as t!i9 Star said the other day, that we are all going to be taxed through the Customs Tariff to the extent of 2s 6d extra. And 1 ask, for what purpose ? Every yoar I sqq the big salaries are raised, and this year they are going to do the same. Inspectors are being appointed right and left, and new billets are being created with big salaries for the lucky occupants. I will only mention one, for example, a " Valuer of Land " at £800 ! The Departments, as the Minister of Lands said down South tho other day, aro being made bigger, and scores of clerks, etc., etc., etc., have been appointed since he tuck odiue. Take the Labor Bureau, what's the use of that? Evory day I meot ucores oi poor swaggers who cannot get work. A friend of mine at Caitoiton writes to inform mo that 120 had tickets for meals at 9d per head served out to them by the constable, during one month. Who pays for ail this 'i la Welling ton tho distress is terrible and is ouiy being relieved by private charity, and I hear the same story from all parts of the colony. I thiuk therefore salaries should be cut down instead of raised, and economy exercised iv every direction. I w.is fool enough last election to vole for the Govern ment candidate, but I won't do it next time — if I am alive — I think we have plenty of laws to last us for the next 20 years, and I would like to see the people keep away from the polls altogether next election, nil the professional politicians sacked, and no mtjeling of Parliament for five years. I am, &c, FISnJtOXGEK.
