An Extraordinary Outrage.
TWO RUFFIANS RUNNING AMUCK. (Pee Press Association). Reefton, August 8. Tbe Mataketake correspondent of the Reefton Times writes : — Two men named Hargreaves and Haldane, had been drinking at May's public house on Saturday. A row ensued, during which they put May on the fjre, A man named Mitchell succeeded in getting a wire off fromMurchison for the police, in spite of the danger he was exposed to, as Hargreaves openly swore he would shoot anyone who attempted to go to the telegraph office. All Saturday night the place was in an uproar. Guns were being fired continually. The store was stripped of everything with tbe exception of a little beer. After taking May out of the fire they burne.cj all his clothes. He is very badly burned W not 1 seriously. He .cagUQ. leave bed. A constable went up from Lyell at 3 o'clock on Monday, and found it necessary to swear in -four special constables, is Hargreaves.. declares he "will not be taken alive. This occurred iv what is known as tho " Lost Tribe District."
