THE CONFESSION WITHDRAWN. (Per Press Association). Auckland, August 5, Inspector Hickson lias received a letter from tho chief constable of Nottingham, stating that he ia making enquiries into Evison's confession of alleged murder at Nottingham of a young Avoman many years ago. Evison has withdrawn his confession to the Auckland police authorities. He says there was no truth in it. This Day. Evison, who confessed to the murder of a girl in Nottingham, June, 1882, made a statement when before the court to-day saying the confession was untrue. He was further remanded. English papers to hand state that the body of a young woman was fonnd in the river in June, 1882, which appeared to give some credence to Evison's story.
